Nearly all of my clients stay in Bayeux. It is ideally located for all the D-Day beaches and sectors and is on the main train line from Paris Saint Lazare to Cherbourg. It is also where I live myself, so is the easiest place for me to meet my groups. My sincere advice if you are not intending to have a car is to check carefully where you are staying. Some B&Bs that appear on travel websites listed as "Bayeux" are in fact miles out of town. The places I recommend in town are within walking distance or a short cab ride from the train station. By staying in Bayeux you will benefit from the many amenities and shops.+
There are many places to stay in Bayeux, There are hotels of varying classification and many Bed and Breakfasts. All styles of accommodation can be found, from quaint old historic buildings with twisting stone stair cases to brand new boutique hotels with a/c and all modern conveniences. For further information about the many options available I suggest you visit the very comprehensive Bayeux Office of Tourism website or this wonderful English language page.
That said, I do have a favorite places to stay. The first is the fantastic Villa Lara owned by Rima and François Hebert. It has large spacious rooms and the friendliest staff you could find in Normandy. It is right in the centre of Bayeux, near the Cathedral, the Tapestry Museum and most of the restaurants and shops. It is a luxury hotel and rightly regarded as one of the finest places to stay in Normandy. Indeed the Villa Lara regularly comes in the top 2 of the Travelers Choice award for Best Independent Hotel in France.
Here are some Trip Advisor links to restaurants in Bayeux, there are plenty to choose from. But in the summer especially it is always best to book in advance.
